These are online courses. Each course has a live lecture by the instructor on the day of the week listed, which includes a live discussion session for those attending the lecture (on Zoom).

Students who cannot attend live can watch the recording of the session the following day (and beyond).

Each course includes discussion forums and additional materials for downloading/viewing.

Courses may be taken/accessed for a grade/credit towards one of the Rhine Certificate Programs (see the website), or just for information (or fun!).

The lecture's purpose was to provide insight into one of the most debated aspects of paranormal research. Whether you’re a seasoned investigator, a curious enthusiast, or someone seeking guidance from a psychic or medium, the presentation hits the basics on how to separate genuine ability from misleading claims. At a high level, I covered:

What to look for when selecting a psychic or medium
How to critically evaluate readings and paranormal claims
The difference between intuition, cold reading, and authentic phenomena
How to protect yourself from scams and misinformation

The lecture is a condensed version of some of what's covered in my course "A Practical Guide to Psychics and Mediums" offered by the Rhine Education Center every so often. The 4-week online course is being offered this May (2026). Lectures can be attended live (Thursday evenings) or watched on replay as of the next day. Online Parapsychology Courses Starting in February/March, 2025

The next round of online Parapsychology courses from the Rhine Education Center starts the week of February 2nd, 2025.

As always, the online courses include a weekly live lecture with time for discussion. These lectures are recorded and available the following day for students who are unable to attend live. Each course includes discussion forums and lots of materials for review.

The courses can either be taken for a grade or just for your own information. If for a grade, that is applied towards one or more of the several certificate programs offered by the Rhine. If not graded, you can attend/participate as much or as little as you like.

All courses have live online lectures which are recorded and may be viewed starting the following day, discussion forums, and much in the way of other provided information. The courses may be taken merely for interest or for a grade and credit towards one of the certificate programs offered by the Rhine.

Introduction to Parapsychology (8 weeks) with Jimmy Akin Monday, May 5th - June 30th (No Class on May 26): In this course students will be introduced to the topics that are studied by professional parapsychologists. Topics will include an overview of the phenomena (Telepathy, Clairvoyance, Precognition, Psychokinesis, and Survival Issues), history, research methodologies and researchers that make up the vibrant field of scientific parapsychology.

A Scientific Approach to ESP (8 weeks) with Loyd Auerbach, MS Tuesday: May 6th - June 24th : This course will define the phenomena and experiences related to Extrasensory Perception (ESP) and provide an in-depth study of the current and historical evidence and research of Telepathy, Clairvoyance, and Precognition. The differences and similarities between these categories of psi experience/abilities will be discussed as well as an overview of what has been learned about psychological and physical variables and theories and models of ESP. Some of the basic topics related to Remote Viewing and applications of ESP will also be introduced in this class.

Developing Investigative Techniques (4 weeks) with Loyd Auerbach, MS Thursday, May 1st - May 29th (No Class May 15th): This four-week course will be a review of techniques and methods for investigations of spontaneous psi phenomena and experiences, including experiences of ESP and PK, apparitions, hauntings, poltergeists, reincarnation, and more. The course will cover the evolution of investigative techniques historically to the present day

Psi Themes in Music (4 weeks) with Matt Marble, PhD Wednesday: May 7th - May 28th: This 4-week course explores how musicians and composers have drawn inspiration from intuitive disciplines and the psi states they facilitate. We'll begin with a reflection on traditional psi music research getting familiar with related phenomena and concepts, then explore three fascinating perspectives on psi music in practice: Altered States (clairaudience, trance, synaesthesia, psychedelia), Symbolism & Synchronicity (dreams, divination, sacred geometry, myth), Magick & Meditation (ceremonial magick, prayer/mantra, meditation, and healing). Along the way we'll listen to incredible music and reflect on the creative process of paranormally inspired artists.

Remote Viewing (4 weeks) with Paul H. Smith, PhD Wednesday: June 11th - July 2nd: This 4-week online introduction to remote viewing (RV) will discuss RV’s origins and history, scientific protocols, methodologies, applications, success stories and failures, explanatory theories, skeptical critiques, and much more, including brief instruction to the RV process and an opportunity to perform your own remote viewing session during the course of instruction. The controversy surrounding teaching of remote viewing will be discussed, and you will be introduced to the roles played in remote viewing by some of the most significant personalities in the field, including such luminaries as Ingo Swann, Hal Puthoff, Russell Targ, Joseph McMoneagle, Ed May, and others.

A Paranormal Casebook -- now an Audiobook

Having had a number of requests to offer an audiobook of A PARANORMAL CASEBOOK -- which is self-published -- I have decided to take part in a new program offered by KDP/Amazon.

The audiobook is now available but do note that their program offers a virtual/AI voice reading the book. I chose a voice that I personally found pleasing and it does a good job, with only a few weird things when reading (mainly reading a website address in the text).

While I would like to have done the narration myself, the editing process is time-consuming, and it is unlikely that I would ever get the audiobook out there otherwise.

Depending on feedback, I'll plan to have my other self-published books as audiobooks the same way. Those titles of mine that are through publishers won't be audiobooks unless the publishers decide to work in that direction.

Field Investigations: Investigating Apparitions, Hauntings, and Poltergeists (8 weeks) with Loyd Auerbach, MS
Tuesday, February 4th - March 25th

The Field Investigations course is designed as an overview to introduce students to the methodologies of parapsychologists specifically with regard to the spontaneous occurrence of psychic experiences as they occur outside laboratory settings, with a main focus on cases of reported Apparitions, Hauntings and Poltergeists. Attendees will gain an understanding of the very basic skills and needed for investigation of ghosts, poltergeists, haunted places and related psychic experiences. The class will include:

The conceptual models of the phenomena,
How the scientific and psychic approaches can mesh together, and
How to assess a situation, investigate it, and resolve the case to the satisfaction of the people having the experiences.

A Skeptical Approach to Parapsychology (8 weeks)

Every good scientist recognizes the importance of taking a skeptical perspective to research and study results. From examinations of early spiritualists to recent psi challenges, skeptics have played an active role in the progress of parapsychology and our understanding of psi phenomena.
This course will discuss parapsychology from a skeptical perspective including an evaluation of how skeptics have helped and hindered the progress of the science. Important concepts of critical thinking will be introduced, including how true skeptical thinking has been a part of the parapsychological process both in and out of the lab.
This course will also look at popular misunderstandings and misconceptions about psi phenomena, the onset of pseudo-skepticism, and the role of true skepticism in scientific investigations.

Paranormal Phenomena: EVP, ITC, and Technology (4 weeks>

This 4-week course will focus on the technology used to examine paranormal phenomena. We will explore Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP), Instrumental Transcommunication (ITC), and other technology that is often used in the investigation of paranormal phenomena.

Theories of Psi: An Introduction (8 weeks)
with John G. Kruth, MS
Tuesday: February 4th - April 1st (No class 2/11)
2:00pm - 4:00pm Eastern Time

Many people claim that there is no theoretical foundation for psi phenomena, but over a century of research has involved many theories of psi activity and the best way to demonstrate psi phenomena. From theories of animal magnetism to quantum physics to astrology, researchers have been testing the validity of theories that may contribute to the events that so many people experience in their lives.
This course is an introduction to the theories that guide psi researchers in their quest to better understand how psi works. It includes practical theories like the experimenter effect and the decline effect, psychological theories like the sheep-goat effect, and more recent theories like Decision Augmentation Theory, First Sight Theory, and even an exploration of similarities between psi phenomena and quantum physics.
Students should have a foundation in parapsychology with a focus on reviewing research articles. It is an introduction to the theories of psi, but does not include an introduction to parapsychology.

Writing About Your Experiences - Part I (4 weeks)
with Sally Ann Drucker, PhD
Monday: February 3rd - February 23rd
2:00pm - 4:00pm Eastern Time

This course is a seminar course and has very limited enrollment.
Are you interested in writing about paranormal phenomena or psychic experiences?
Writing Sample - SpookyWhether writing about your own psychic experiences or those of others, in this course you'll go over some of the tools needed to share your thoughts and express ideas in ways that are accessible and interesting to others. These same skills are useful for writing fiction or fictionalized versions of your own experiences.
Class sessions will cover basic writing concepts such as purpose, audience, narrative voice, setting, imagery, dialogue, and style – but in parapsychological contexts, with examples focused on psi experiences. Through exercises and critiquing, you'll explore your own writing with the instructor and with other students. Each week you will provide a writing sample in an online forum and review your work in the online courseroom and in live class discussions.

This four-week course is Part I of a two-part course. Part II will involve longer or more involved written work, and it will be offered at a later date. You must take Part I to qualify to register for Part II, but you can also take Part I by itself. (Students taking this course to complete a certificate program must take both Part I & Part II.)

Kicking off 2025...and the new Blog - Part Two

As I mentioned in my last blog (which was the first blog -- confusin' ain't it?), I do have other plans for this year.

What might be coming in this blog...

I've not really had a blog for a few years but felt like it was time. So 2025 -- and this blog -- is it. I'm not committing (yet) to posting on a regular basis, but rather as interesting new developments in Parapsychology and Consciousness Research come to my attention.

I'll also likely be a bit more "regular" by writing a blog based on an interesting question I am asked in my biweekly live YouTube Q&A, Ask Professor Paranormal.

I may post something more pop culture-related (movies, TV/streaming, comic books, etc.) especially when connected to the psychic/paranormal world -- but I just might write about those new books, movies, etc. that are interesting and exciting to me.

Folks who know me also generally know about my love (and knowledge) of good chocolate, so look for the occasional recommendation of something to try. Lately I've been buying my artisan chocolate bars from a great online site, Bar & Cocoa. Amazing selection and service.

Speaking/Lecturing

Watch my Events page for upcoming in-person and online lectures and presentations. I don't typically find myself speaking at more than one (sometimes two) paranormal/ghost conferences, but it's likely I'll be asked sometime over the next few months. Same for online lectures, which are more common throughout the year.

The Rhine Research Center is celebrating the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Duke University Parapsychology Laboratory, which moved off-campus in 1965 and morphed into the organization that was eventually named in honor of the founders, J.B. and Louisa Rhine. I should be participating in some online events this year and typically find myself in Durham, NC, in November for something in person. Watch the Events page for all Rhine events (whether I'm included or not) -- or better yet, join the Rhine as a member.

Other publishing projects

I've recently had the idea for shorter, succinct books (appropriately priced) on a few topics, one of which would be based on my Rhine Education Center course on psychic development ("Developing Your Intuition"). It will include "experiments," exercises, and a game or two -- all based on what we've learned about ESP in Parapsychology and my own work with numerous psychics and mediums over the last 40+ years.

Another short book I'm considering for 2025 is one to provide a basic understanding of Parapsychology directed at the "paranormal community" (ghost hunters & paranormal investigators), so many of whom I've found haven't been exposed to how my field really connects with what they're doing.

I'm open to other ideas...

Not committing to this, but I have ideas for a couple of audio and video projects of my own this year (or next). I'll let you know through this blog as things develop.

Kicking off 2025...and the new Blog - Part One

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

In thinking about what my first blog should be, it occurred to me that I should address a question, variations of which I've been getting in almost every podcast interview I've had over the last few months: "What projects will you be working on in the next year?"

Here we go...and of course, don't hold me to this, please, as other projects/issues can crop up which end up higher priority in the moment.

Watch for Part two of my 2025 plans in the next few days.

BOOKS:

My book, MIND OVER MATTER, has been out of print again for a couple of years since Llewellyn let it go. As I have the rights back, I'd hoped to get it back out there in 2024 but never got the chance. Look for it on Amazon.com again sometime in the first quarter, both in paperback and ebook formats.

I'll also be working on two new ones for 2025, which I will be self-publishing (otherwise, between finding a publisher and getting it on their schedule, they probably wouldn't see the light of day until at least 2026 or even after).

First off is PRESENTING THE PARANORMAL TO THE PUBLIC. Ever feel like people around you look at you funny when talking about psychic/paranormal phenomena and topics? Do you want to sound credible when doing so? Do you ever speak to groups but feel you can upgrade your public speaking skills? Are you a good media interview subject? What about writing and promoting?

This book will be an extension of an online course with the same title I teach in the summer for the Rhine Education Center , a practical skills approach to talking/writing about psychic/paranormal topics and parapsychology. It's based on my extensive experience as an educator and communicator on the topic of parapsychology/the paranormal. I'm hoping to get it out no later than June of 2025.

Later in 2025, I plan to have ready a second volume of A PARANORMAL CASEBOOK (have not yet decided on the subtitle). More cases and commentary!

COURSES:

I mainly teach many online courses through the Rhine Education Center, part of the Rhine Research Center, though each winter I also teach a graduate-level course for Atlantic University called "Principles of Parapsychology."

The Rhine courses have live virtual lectures & discussion 8-10 PM Eastern / 5-7 PM Pacific. These are recorded so that students who can't make the live sessions can watch them. There are online discussion forums and lots of supporting material (mostly documents, some video, some audio).

The courses may be take for a grade and credit towards one of the several Certificate Programs offered by the Rhine -- or just take them for personal enrichment (and some fun)!

Attendees will gain an understanding of the very basic skills and needed for investigation of ghosts, poltergeists, haunted places and related psychic experiences.

Paranormal Phenomena: EVP, ITC, & other Technologies -Wednesdays, March 5-26/2025. Loyd Auerbach, Instructor. This 4-week course will focus on the technology used to examine paranormal phenomena. We will explore Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP), Instrumental Transcommunication (ITC), and other technology that is often used in the investigation of paranormal phenomena.

These and courses offered by other instructors will be posted shortly after the New Year on the Rhine Education Center website. Do note that members of the Rhine Research Center receive a discount on the courses.

ASK PROFESSOR PARANORMAL Q&A PODCAST:

I've been doing a (nearly) every other Sunday live Q&A on YouTube for almost a year and a half (and a Facebook Live session before that). I plan to continue this throughout 2025.

The first 2025 session of Ask Professor Paranormal is happening this coming Sunday, January 5, from 8:30-9:30 PM Eastern / 5:30-6:30 PM Pacific. Past episodes have been recorded and are available under the LIve tab on the channel.

I plan to host these every other Sunday (so the next one is January 19, then February 2) through May, after which I will shift a week due to travel plans for June and July. We'll have the upcoming dates showing on the channel in the next week (again, under the Live tab).

One last thing: if there's a question you have about parapsychology, psychic/paranormal phenomena and experiences, psychics and mediums, investigations, paranormal TV, or anything related and cannot make it to the live, feel free to email me at askprofparanormal@gmail.com prior to a show and I'll address it.

Welcome to the new Loyd Auerbach (a.k.a. Professor Paranormal) website!
It's been a while since I've had a website of my own but here we are.

On this site, I'll occasionally post new writing and ideas via the blog and notices of events, webinars, and courses I'm either participating in or presenting/teaching. I'll post links to new podcasts and other media that have had me as a guest or interviewed me.

I'll also add articles I've written over the past 30 years that I think might still be of interest to those interested in psychic phenomena/paranormal topics and the field of Parapsychology.

Backfilling some of the older material and adding new material will be an ongoing process.
